Legion Team

Teams will meet for 2 practices per week for a total of at least 6 hours of training.  The season will progress from working on fundamentals, through developing good self-goaling and evaluation habits, effective transitions, team blocking, defensive, and audible offensive systems, and all the little intangibles players and teams need to learn to be successful and develop a winning attitude.

Practice days are set for Mondays from 4-7PM and Saturdays from 8-11AM.  The season is underway, going great, and will continue at least through the end of May.

Our goal is to get players into about 10 tournaments this season.  Teams will play in all GEVA Juniors tournaments they qualify for. As of right now, we will put one team in to play in the MLK Classic in PA in January and at Penn State in May.  We will also look to find additional GEVA Women's events, and out of region events so the players can maximize their experience with volleyball.  As of right now, the GEVA schedule is very Sunday heavy, so does not conflict significantly with our practice schedule.

There will be approximately 150 hours of structured practice time and scrimmages in addition to our tournament schedule.

There are distinct differences between top travel team coaching and competition and local non-travel team competition.  The two key differences are in the level of the coaching and in the level of the competition.  Players who practice and play against the best level competition, day in and day out, in a challenging environment that lets them take risks and learn and grow athletically will develop faster and more effectively than players who do not have the same opportunities.  Legion is focused on developing players, and in having players develop their own skills and resources under the watchful eyes of coaching that has helped teams finish in the top 10 in the country.

The Legion Volleyball coaching structure involves all players being kept to the highest standards of effort and performance possible.  Practices are structured to be challenging and rewarding, as well as fast paced and fun.  Players who are challenged tend to rise to the occasion.

Because of our innovative structure and our focus on transparency and affordability, our goal is to offer "National Team" caliber coaching and development at little more than "Local Team" pricing as it is seen at other clubs throughout Morris County.  Focused drills and skills work will help players develop core fundamentals as well as the key decision sets that will help them succeed beyond the practice court.  All players have the same access and opportunity to get the same level of feedback and growth.

As a coach, I pride myself in my ability to work with every single player individually to try to understand how best to make each technique element, strategy component, and transition movement make the most sense and get the greatest possible result.  I will not let opportunities for improvement go by without making certain each player and I give it our best possible effort.

Players Boot Camp (looking to schedule for early 2010)

Each session will provide 10 practices of four hours each.  This will provide 40 hours of instruction in all major and most minor facets of the game.  This class is limited to 48 participants on 4 courts in order to maximize repetitions and play time for players meaning there will be six players per side of the court.

This camp is focused on developing players in the 6th through 9th grade age range, and court assignments will be determined by position, ability, and strength.  Court assignments will change from week to week as needs require.

I guarantee that you will learn at least 2-3 times as much as you would learn from the average high school coach during a high school season.

The Players Boot Camp will incorporate instruction in the following areas:
  • Forearm Passing
  • Hand Passing
  • Setting
  • Hitting
  • Blocking
  • Defense
  • Serving
  • Jump Serving
  • Agility
  • Communication
  • Strength
  • Footwork
  • Transitions
  • On-Court Leadership
  • Offensive Systems
  • Defensive Systems
  • and much, much more.

The cost for this boot camp is $400, working out to $10/hour.

I will look to hold the next boot camp starting in late December.  Free 2 hour skills clinic will be held
in early December, with an Informational and Sign Up meeting to follow.

Coaches Boot Camp (will parallel Players Boot Camp)

This consists of two days of Theory and Skills work providing 8 hours of foundation prior to 10 weeks of putting everything into action with the athletes.  The Practice and Implementation portion camp will last until the players complete their camp.  Once the players have arrived, there will be an hour of instruction, starting prior to each session to discuss the specific facets to be covered that day, and to discuss the various challenges and learning opportunities presented in the activities we will be pursuing.  This will, of course, be followed by four hours of hands on work, fun, and interaction with the athletes.  This ensures that both you and the athletes get maximum attention and opportunity to learn.  This combined camp is limited to 8 coaches, providing each coach a team of 6 athletes per week to work with.

This camp is geared to new coaches, coaches who would like to accelerate their learning curves regarding the subtleties and nuances of the game, and experienced coaches who are interested in getting a different perspective on what they've been doing in order to gain new ideas for next year.

As with the players, I guarantee that this Boot Camp will provide you at least 2-3 times the experience and exposure to learning opportunities as the average high school season.

Topics discussed during theory days will include:

  • Goal Setting
  • Components of Successful Practices
  • Essential vs Non-essential Technique Corrections
  • Positive Reinforcement of Success
  • Implementation of P.A.C.E. into All Drills
  • Drill Progressions
  • Effective Standard Setting
  • Incorporation of Strength and Agility Training
  • Team System Development
  • and much, much more.

The cost for the combined Boot Camp is $1,160, working out to $20/hour for all 58 hours of combined theory and implementation.  For coaches interested just in the Theory and Skills portion of this camp, the cost is $200 for the two four hour sessions.

Two hour Special Topics will be scheduled starting in early November as various elements of this Boot Camp program will be broken out and focused on in shorter, more involved sessions.  Please check back periodically for updates and presentation materials.
